WE ARE SENNEBOGEN: Johann Ranzinger provides insights into the control technology department

Johann Ranzinger began his career at SENNEBOGEN in 2017 as a Master's student and was promoted to team leader two years later. In a short interview, he gives us an insight into the world of control technology, describes his typical working day and shares his highlight at SENNEBOGEN so far.

Johann, what is your role in control technology?

I lead the software development team. Together with my team, I look after all software issues relating to the machine, including the control unit software and the telematics software for cloud connections.

What are the main tasks in control technology?

The tasks are varied. Software development is only a small part of it. Our department also takes care of electrics, electrification and hydraulics - in short, everything outside of traditional steel construction. Our department is responsible for setting the machines in motion, whether by hydraulic drive, electric drive or battery drive. We design and plan everything in close cooperation with our colleagues from the technical office, who develop the steel construction.

Impressive project

"I particularly remember the 895 E project. It was my first project and it was also the company's largest excavator. The development of the software and the commissioning were exciting moments. It was a great collaboration between testing, technical design and control engineering. It was a great feeling to see the excavator being commissioned in Turkey and going into operation. I will remember this project for a long time to come."

What does a typical working day in control technology look like?

I don't have a typical working day. In addition to coding and programming in the office, I also switch between commissioning outside on the machine, supporting customer service in the event of problems and working with different project teams in different places. This versatility and variety is what makes our department so exciting.

What skills and competencies are important for your department?

The most important thing is logical thinking and an understanding of how different components interact. As a software developer, for example, you not only have to be able to program, but also understand how hydraulics and electrics work in an excavator. You therefore need a comprehensive technical understanding. It is at least as important to enjoy technology and the excavator itself. You should not only build and design the excavator, but also experience and drive it.

Do you have any tips for students who are currently looking for a career?

It's important not to rush things and to take an interest in different areas. Internships are a good way of gaining an insight into different sectors. You shouldn't commit yourself too early, otherwise you might miss the chance to discover something that really suits you.
